UPLAND — CALIFORNIA58 LOCAL. The City of Upland broke ground on Tom Thomas Magnolia Plaza on May 14, 2026, beginning work on a public gathering area in historic downtown. The city said the project would create open space for gatherings, seasonal celebrations and small concerts while serving as a trailhead along the Pacific Electric Trail.

What residents should know

The plaza is designed to encourage pedestrians and cyclists to pause in the commercial district instead of simply traveling through it. Plans described by the city include seating, landscape improvements and a more inviting environment for everyday use.

The project also honors former city councilmember Tom Thomas. At the groundbreaking, city officials recognized the Thomas family and the family of Roman ‘Roach’ Foronda for their community ties.

Upland’s May announcement expected the project to be completed sometime in 2026 and said the city intended to hold a ribbon-cutting later. That estimate is not evidence the plaza is open today. Residents should look for an explicit opening notice before treating the area as a finished public facility.

Downtown businesses may benefit from foot traffic, but longer-term economic results cannot be established from a groundbreaking alone.
